H. Dennis Sherk

Science Teacher


      Dr. H. Dennis Sherk, 83, of State College died Saturday, January 8, 2005, at Brookline in State College. Born May 8, 1921 in Annville, PA., Dr. Sherk was the son of the late A. Herman Sherk and M. Anna (Miller) Sherk. He was a graduate of Punxsutawney High School. He earned his bachelor’s degree at Lebanon Valley College and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He later earned his master’s degree from Cornell University and his doctorate from Penn State University. He was director of Theatre Arts for Kansas State College in Emporia, Kansas. He helped start public television station WPSX-TV while serving on the faculty at Penn State. Later, he served as director of technological media at the University of Toledo in Toledo, OH. Dr. Sherk was a member of State College Presbyterian Church. He was a Deacon and sang in the chancel choir. Dr. Sherk belonged to the following honor societies: Theta Alpha Phi-theatre honorary, Pi Kappa Delta-speech honorary, Phi Alpha Epsilon-scholastic honorary, and Phi Delta Kappa-education honorary. He is survived by his wife, Juanita Kathryn (Moses) Sherk; his sons, Douglas L. Sherk of Vinton, VA., and Christopher T. Sherk of Rock Hill, S.C., and three grandchildren, Joshua A. Sherk and Erin R. Sherk both of Levine, AZ, and Ashlee R. Sherk of Vinton, VA. He is preceded in death by his son, Anthony Dennis Sherk. The funeral was held on Wednesday, January 12, 2005 at Hill Lutheran Church, 998 N. Mill St. in Lebanon, PA. Visitation followed the service at the church's fellowship hall. Burial was at Hill Church Cemetery, Cleona, PA.
