Pastor Butch White lead a memorial service for Gorman Earl Shaffer on Sunday afternoon, October 25, 2009 at Wesley Chapel Methodist Church in Urbana, Md. Bill Freas, Red Nolder, and John Sexton participated by sharing memories of Gorman’s youth in Punxsy and his early years in Maryland. Butch White presented the journey to Christ from several perspectives. The congregation shared much laughter and many tears. The service seemed to create a bond among the diverse groups of attendees, about 100 in all, including dozens of friends from Baker Jr High, where John Rolls and Gorman taught together. Roger and Niki Hamill, Eugene and Gail Rolls, John and Priscilla Rolls, Randy Rolls, and Karen White were also at the service. Maryland and Punxsy friends shared introductions and stories with each other until after 5PM. Gorman’s wife, Jayne, younger daughter Allison Marsh and family of Frederick MD, and older daughter Amy Beth Vigness and family of Charlotte NC, spent several hours after the service with the attendees. It was a beautiful fall day. Later many Pennsylvania friends had dinner together and visited during the evening.
