Joseph F. Kippert, 86, of Rochester Mills, passed away Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at his home. A son of the late Charles A. and Eliza (Pollock) Kippert, he was born in Covode on Sept. 19, 1924. He was married to Marge M. (Havrilla) Kippert, of Rochester Mills, who survives. They were married on July 11, 1953.
Mr. Kippert started his teaching career in a two-room schoolhouse in Smicksburg for grades 5 through 8. He also taught grades 6 through 12 in Rossiter and later at the Punxsutawney Junior High School, where he taught science and was planetarium director. He also taught night classes at Clarion University until he retired in 1984. After retirement, he continued his love for teaching by offering evening classes in astronomy at Clarion University. A total of 25 student teachers came to Punxsutawney to study astronomy under his direction.
After his retirement, Mr. Kippert enjoyed his garden, orchard and several beehives that he kept. In addition to his wife, Marge, he is survived by his niece, Carolyn McQuown, of Punxsutawney; great-niece Lisa Braughler and husband Corbet Martin; and a great-great-niece, Mariah Martin, all of Zelienople. He was preceded in death by two brothers, John Kippert and Paul Kippert.
A funeral service was held Oct. 1, 2010 at the McCabe Funeral Home in Punxsutawney with the Rev. Paul Thompson officiating. Interment was made at Calvary Cemetery. Online condolences may be made at mccabefuneral homes.com.
