George S. Gardiner, 91, Punxsutawney, passed away peacefully at his home on May 1, 2014. He was born June 2, 1922, in DuBois, the son of George A. and Martha (Newell) Gardiner. On August 24, 1946, he married Mabel V. (Orris) Gardiner. She preceded him in death on May 6, 2008. George was a World War II Veteran of the U.S. Air Force. He was a graduate of California University of Pennsylvania and received his Master’s Degree in Education from the Penn State University.

He was a retired Industrial Arts teacher at Punxsutawney High School, where he taught for 35 years. As a member of the Punxsutawney Alliance Church for over 60 years, he served in various capacities, including teaching his Sunday school class until earlier this year. He was an active member of Child Evangelism for over 30 years. George was a member of the Punxsutawney Art Association. After retirement, George became a self-taught master woodcarver, frequently displaying his works at art shows and events around the area. He enjoyed life to the fullest and stayed active with his many interests.

He is survived by his two sons, Phil Gardiner and wife Gena of Texas, and Timothy Gardiner and wife Cindy of Indiana, PA; a daughter Susan Gardiner Froman and husband Robert of Florida; a sister Helen Rae Winters of Bradford, PA; and a grandson Blair Gardiner. In addition to his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by a sister Claudine Wallace.

A funeral service was held on Monday, May 5, 2014, at the Deeley Funeral Home with Reverend John Buchmann officiating. The family requests that donations, in memory of George, be made to the Punxsutawney Alliance Church or to the American Heart Association.
